　東京音楽大学音楽学部器楽科卒業。在学中トランペットを金石幸夫氏に、和声学を池辺晋一郎氏と三枝成章氏に、作曲と飲酒を細矢禊氏にそれぞれ師事したはずなのだが、キャバレー勤め(通いではない。)が祟り、殆ど授業には出ていなかった。今から思えばこんな重鎮たちの授業を受けるチャンスを、目先の金のために失っていたと思うと悔やまれる。
　当時からキャバレーの踊り子さんたちの楽譜を書き始めアレンジャーの道を目指す。卒業後本格的に作編曲家・キーボード奏者としてプロ活動を始める。とりわけ故・坂本九さんとの出会いは、その後の音楽活動に大変大きな励みとなった。
1982年より中森明菜コンサートの音楽監督を7年間にわたって務める傍ら、NHKレッツゴーヤング、ザッツミュージック、愉快にオンステージ、アイドル・オン・ステージ、紅白歌合戦など数多くの音楽番組のレギュラースタッフとして作編曲活動をする。
　映像関係では井筒和幸氏と30年に渡って、東宝映画「のど自慢」「ビッグショー!　ハワイに唄えば」(指揮者役で出演も)、松竹映画「岸和田少年愚連隊」「さすらいのトラブルバスター」、にっかつ映画「金魂巻」「ヒーローショー」などの映画作品を作り続けている。
2004年にシリーズで放送された「BSあなたが選ぶ映画音楽」では音楽監督として、東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団、日本フィルハーモニー交響楽団、東京シティ・フィルハーモニック管弦楽団、神奈川フィルハーモニー管弦楽団を指揮する。
　また音楽監督として全ての編曲を手がけたＮＨＫ「青春のポップス」は、国内はもとより海外のアーティスト達からも賞賛され、名実共にＮＨＫナンバーワン音楽番組となった。
自らが作編曲した「お江戸でござる」のテーマは番組の人気・内容と共に好評を得た。
2020年紅白歌合戦では東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団を指揮。NHKBS「映画音楽はすばらしい!」音楽監督。
1997年11月、神奈川フィルハーモニー管弦楽団「音楽の街づくりコンサート」で オーケストラ指揮者デビュー。以来、2013年7月まで、同楽団ポップスオーケストラ音楽監督を務めた。
2011年、2013年、2019年、水樹奈々Live Graceシリーズでオーケストラによるアリーナ公演、ASKAとのビッグバンドコンサート「昭和が見ていたクリスマス」、May J.、スキマスイッチ武道館コンサート等々。そして布施明、渡辺真知子、藤澤ノリマサらとのオーケストラ・レコーディングなど、ビッグネームからの信頼も厚い。
現在、新日本フィルハーモニー交響楽団、大阪交響楽団、広島交響楽団と、シリーズ化されたコンサートが進行中。 Graduated from Tokyo College of Music, Department of Instrumental Music. While enrolled, he was supposed to have studied trumpet under Yukio Kanaishi, harmony under Shinichiro Ikebe and Shigeaki Saegusa, and composition and drinking under Misogi Hosoya, but due to his work at a cabaret (not as a regular), he hardly attended classes. Looking back, he regrets losing the chance to study under such prominent figures for the sake of immediate money.
From that time, he began writing scores for cabaret dancers and aimed to become an arranger. After graduation, he began his professional career as a composer, arranger, and keyboardist. In particular, his encounter with the late Kyu Sakamoto was a great encouragement to his subsequent musical activities.
From 1982, he served as music director for Akina Nakamori's concerts for seven years, while also working as a regular staff member for numerous music programs such as NHK's "Let's Go Young," "That's Music," "Yukikai ni On Stage," "Idol On Stage," and "Kohaku Uta Gassen."
In the film industry, he has collaborated with Kazuyuki Izutsu for 30 years, creating films such as Toho's "Nodojiman" and "Big Show! Utaeba Hawaii" (also appearing as a conductor), Shochiku's "Kishiwada Shonen Gurentai" and "Sasurai no Trouble Buster," and Nikkatsu's "Kinkonkan" and "Hero Show."
In 2004, he conducted the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, and Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra as music director for the "BS Eiga Ongaku" series.
NHK's "Seishun no Pops," for which he arranged all the music as music director, was praised by both domestic and international artists and became NHK's number one music program in both name and reality.
The theme song for "Oedo de Gozaru," which he composed and arranged, was well received along with the program's popularity and content.
In 2020, he conducted the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra at the Kohaku Uta Gassen. He is also the music director for NHK BS's "Eiga Ongaku wa Subarashii!"
In November 1997, he debuted as an orchestra conductor at the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra's "Ongaku no Machizukuri Concert." Since then, he served as the orchestra's pops orchestra music director until July 2013.
In 2011, 2013, and 2019, he conducted arena performances with orchestras for Nana Mizuki's Live Grace series, ASKA's big band concert "Showa ga Miteita Christmas," May J., Sukima Switch's Budokan concert, and more. He also has strong trust from big names such as Akira Fuse, Machiko Watanabe, and Norimasa Fujisawa for orchestral recordings.
Currently, concert series are underway with the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Osaka Symphony Orchestra, and the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra.
