Jazzを中心にポップミュージックからクラシックまで幅広いジャンルで活動する。
‘91年ファーストソロアルバムをリリース。 以後、定期的にソロアルバムを発表。 リーダープロジェクトとして管楽器7人とドラマーという編成の「村田陽一 Solid Brass」「村田陽一 オーケストラ」「村田陽一 Hook Up」、1人でルーパーやエフェクターを駆使した「ソロパフォーマンス」がある。 海外のプレイヤーとの共演も多く、マイケル・ブレッカー、ランディ・ブレッカー、デビッド・サンボーン、パットメセニー、タワー・オブ・パワー、イヴァン・リンス、ベン・E・キング、ジョー・サンプル、マーカス・ミラーと枚挙にいとまがない。また自身のバンドのニューヨークスィートベイジルでのライブを筆頭に海外での演奏経験も多い。 作編曲も小編成からシンフォニーオーケストラまで多岐に渡る。 32年間、渡辺貞夫オーケストラの編曲、コンサートマスターを務め近年は新日本フィル、群馬交響楽団とのジョイントコンサートでは全曲の編曲や指揮も務める。また椎名林檎、石川さゆり、imase、King & Prince、NHK「紅白歌合戦」「映画音楽はすばらしい!」、リオオリンピック閉会式セレモニーなどの編曲を多数手掛ける。
JRA、サントリーなどのCMも多数手掛けている。 近年は香取慎吾に楽曲を提供、ソロ活動におけるステージアレンジやバンドマスターを担当している。 (敬称略)

Active in a wide range of genres from pop music to classical, with a focus on Jazz.
He released his first solo album in 1991 and has since released solo albums regularly. His leader projects include "Yoichi Murata Solid Brass," a formation of seven wind instruments and a drummer, "Yoichi Murata Orchestra," "Yoichi Murata Hook Up," and a "solo performance" in which he uses loopers and effectors by himself. He has collaborated with many overseas players, including Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, David Sanborn, Pat Metheny, Tower of Power, Ivan Lins, Ben E. King, Joe Sample, and Marcus Miller, to name a few. He also has extensive experience performing overseas, including a live performance with his own band at Sweet Basil in New York. His compositions and arrangements range from small ensembles to symphony orchestras. For 32 years, he has served as the arranger and concertmaster for the Sadao Watanabe Orchestra, and in recent years he has also arranged and conducted all the pieces for joint concerts with the New Japan Philharmonic and the Gunma Symphony Orchestra. He has also arranged numerous pieces for Ringo Sheena, Sayuri Ishikawa, imase, King & Prince, NHK's "Kohaku Uta Gassen" and "Film Music is Wonderful!", and the Rio Olympics closing ceremony.
He has also worked on many commercials for companies such as JRA and Suntory. In recent years, he has provided music to Shingo Katori. He has been in charge of stage arrangements and bandmaster for solo activities.
In 2024, he released his 23rd album, "Tapestry II."
